Born as an April Fools' prank that Sega decided to see through, the mystery aboard the Mirage Express splits the people who wanted to do real detective work from the ones who only wanted to hear the suspects talk their way out of it.
The party that becomes a crime scene
Amy Rose planned a murder-mystery party for her own birthday aboard the Mirage Express. Trouble is, before the game can properly begin, it's Sonic the Hedgehog who turns up dead — and nobody is sure the acting ever stopped. You walk into the mess as the new hire: someone on their first day of work aboard the train, left to question the series' best-loved cast and work out what happened. Among the suspects is the Conductor, who is finally retiring after a long career looking after the line.
The art is hand-drawn, scene by scene, and the soundtrack gets the same care — the kind of craft players themselves call surprising for something dreamed up as a throwaway gag. Sega never hid the joke: in its own description of the game, it warns that this is not a Sonic Team production, says it is betting on the power of a side story, and quips that one way or another it all ends up canon. That register, halfway between a funeral and an inside joke, holds the mystery together from the first scene to the last.
The April Fools' joke Sega decided to finish
The game grew out of an April Fools' prank in 2023, and the gaming press braced for the usual script: a tempting announcement, followed by the admission that none of it was real. That is not what happened. You open the story expecting the familiar punchline and find, underneath the April 1 announcement, an actual playable game about solving Sonic's own murder.
In November 2025, Sega came back to the project — not to add story, but for a security update tied to the Unity engine, with no change to the content. It is a small detail that says something larger: the game that started as a prank is still being maintained, the same size it always was, with the same plot it always had.
They came for the joke and stayed for the dialogue
The reaction that keeps coming back is astonishment: nobody expected this much care from a game born as a prank. Players praise the comic timing between the characters, the cinematic score and a charming line of art. It is the kind of mystery that holds your attention from the first scene to the last, with no room left to drift. On Steam, where the game lives, the player verdict bears that enthusiasm out: approval wins by a landslide, and dissenting voices are scarce.
Recent responses show people coming back to the case years after release. In October 2026, one player logged a single hour and called the ending nostalgic, even though they had arrived late to this wave of write-ups. That same month, another player spent seven hours aboard the train and called the game a rare find for fans of the series, with Tails as their favourite suspect to question. Another recurring piece of praise goes to the challenge of collecting rings between obstacles — a stretch that irritated people with its target of a hundred rings, yet which, on top of gathering clues and facing down each suspect, left the art and the personalities on a par with the rest of the game.
The mystery you don't solve, you just watch
The complaint that comes back hardest is aimed at the promise of investigation. One player with an hour on the clock, writing in April 2023, sums up the mismatch: you click on clues, but it is a dodging-and-ring-collecting challenge — not your own reasoning — that decides whether the character's guess is right. Another, with three hours logged in November 2024, lands in the same place: for anyone who wanted to put on the detective hat and assemble the puzzle with their own head, the game hands over far less agency than the plot suggests.
One player with five hours logged, in April 2023, watched progress stall for real: the screen went black and the save file stopped loading. They acknowledge where the project came from, an April Fools' joke, and still wanted more polish at release.
The longest caveat, posted in January 2026 after three hours of play, regrets that the party and the idea belong to Amy Rose while the spotlight goes to a supporting character the player cannot stand listening to — and even so, they call the experience relaxing, with a genuine streak of suspense. The barrier that comes up most among Brazilian players, though, is a different one: with no Portuguese subtitles, the game only opens up to people who already read English.
For people who love the cast, not the puzzle
The right test for whether to install it is not the genre, it is what you expect to do with your own hands. Anyone boarding for the cast — to watch Tails, the Conductor and the usual suspects argue over a crime inside Sega's own prank — comes away happy after a couple of sessions and is already laughing at some line. Anyone boarding to build the case with their own head, to work out alone who lied and why, will feel the floor give way: here the game thinks for you, and your part is clicking the right clue.
For Brazilian players there is a second cut, and this one has no middle ground: with no Portuguese subtitles, anyone who doesn't read English is shut out before questioning the first suspect. Inside those two filters — expectation and language — the answer is simple. You don't investigate Sonic's death: you watch someone investigate it for you, and applaud.
